Successful manual polishing of a car body requires patience and strength. It is a labor-intensive procedure that requires not only experience and certain knowledge, but also endurance.
The polishing compound dries quickly. After applying it to the surface, you need to complete the work within 5 minutes.
Preparation
Before polishing a car without a machine, you need to prepare thoroughly to get the best result. The preparation stage includes:
Selecting and purchasing special polishing compounds. You need to choose the compounds carefully. Each material has unique properties, so they differ in effectiveness, quality, efficiency, and cost. Before buying a specific product, carefully study the information on the label.
Work area. Polishing should be carried out in a warm, well-lit room with ventilation. Only in a warm place can you achieve the required consistency of the compound, which is suitable for application to the surface of the vehicle body. With good artificial lighting, you will be able to see any cosmetic defects in the bodywork, allowing you to carefully remove them. The room should be equipped with linear sources of diffused cold/warm light. Inspect the car on a clear and sunny day. Mark any defects found with a marker. An effective ventilation system in the room will provide the necessary amount of fresh air, allowing you to work comfortably and safely.
Keep in mind that polishing compounds contain chemical components that can negatively affect your health. It is recommended to wear a respirator during work.
Cleaning the car body. The car must be thoroughly washed. This will allow you to better see the defects that need to be removed. Special shampoos and detergents are used for washing. Remove any remaining water with a soft cloth or towel. Cover any structural elements of the body that will not be polished. Apply masking tape to decorative elements, rubber and plastic parts, glass edges, and various openings. To degrease the surface, you can use diluted white spirit or special compounds. There should not be two cars in the same room at the same time. This requirement must be taken into account, as dirt, dust, and sand from another car may get onto the body during the polishing process.
Polishing
This is the most painstaking and responsible process. All operations must be performed at a certain pace. The polish dries within a few minutes after it is applied to the surface. In this case, it is important to complete the treatment in time. If you do not have time, then the work will need to be redone the next day. You need to wait, as there is a risk of deformation of the paintwork.
The polishing process consists of several consecutive stages:
- Prepare the polishing compound and tools.
- Wash and dry the car.
- Apply the polish to the paintwork.
- Dry the bodywork.
The quality of the result will depend on how you apply the substance. It is recommended to follow these rules:
- Do not add large amounts of the product at once. They dry quickly, and you may not have time to rub them in. Once the polish has dried, you will have to redo the work.
- When the product is completely rubbed in, wipe the body with a damp cloth.
For convenience in polishing and applying products, the car body is visually divided into several structural elements: the roof, doors, fenders, and hood. These parts can also be further divided into sections.
Polishing sequence:
- Shake the bottle with the liquid polishing compound thoroughly.
- Apply the compound to a soft sponge or cloth. It is also acceptable to spray the material directly onto the surface of the body/part.
- Rub the polish evenly and gently over the surface.
- Rub the applied material until it is no longer visible. A good indicator is when the sponge or cloth glides smoothly over the surface.
- If necessary, remove any remaining polish with a dry cloth.
- Continue polishing if the problem persists after treating the surface.
The composition dries within 5 minutes, so do not delay in rubbing it in. Active impact on the surface can lead to deterioration of the protective coating. Be careful with corners and edges, as they can be quickly rubbed off during processing. The areas being processed should not overlap.
It is recommended to start the body polishing procedure using low-abrasive compounds. They are designed to remove minor cosmetic defects. After applying them, you can use products that do not contain abrasive particles. They are called finishing compounds. They help remove minor imperfections in the paintwork, add depth to the paint, and ensure shine.
Finishing stage
The final stage is the finishing polish. This procedure is carried out using special pastes that do not contain abrasive particles. They are rubbed in with a piece of foam rubber.
